How to get any job?
How to get any job?
Dear Reader,
Welcome to my blog. My name is Shiva Krishnan and I am an author, social media marketer, a blogger and a Youtube Video creator ( this is my Channel link https://youtu.be/92POg6j2bac)
I will provide a brief overview of my blog. My blog is about tips and stories that help people and my blog is for those who are in search of positive, powerful, empowering inspiring stories, Tips related to sales and marketing and most importantly those who are looking to solve a problem.
As mentioned in my previous blogs, my blogs are not for those who are seeking grammatical perfection.
So here I go with my fourth blog. Now I do understand that many of us feel threatened, demotivated, hopeless and confused. This applies to freshers as well as job seekers who have plenty of experience and this is also applicable to anyone looking for a job in any field whether it is a blue-collar job or a white-collar job. So I will share a few common things behind getting hired for any job
So let us look at examples of people applying for a job of sales executive or sales representative, customer service,
chartered accountant, engineer, teacher, cook, driver, software developer, plumber, editor etc etc
So in the first scenario, there are let us say 10 applicants who apply
for the post of sales executive and as soon as they enter the cabin of the hiring manager, the hiring manager called XYZ asks them to sell a pen and out of 10, 9 people fumble, hesitate and say we cannot do it. Recruiter XYZ says thank you and calls for the next applicant and asks him to sell a pen. The next applicant ABC starts his pitch and tells him that he has got a significant pen which is actually a replica of the same pen used by
Hollywood star Marlon Brando and that for a limited period that pen is on sale for $1500(INR 1 14 000 approximately) as it is Marlon Brando' s birthday whereas the actual price is $10000(INR 7,60,000 approximately). Xyz says well that is good but I do not have $1500 to pay upfront and this applicant ABC says Sir no problem you can run this on your credit card and then convert it into EMI. Xyz says what are the unique selling points about this pen and ABC says it is waterproof, has ink that can last for a long time and that it has magic ink with the help of which handwriting can be made to disappear and moreover along with this pen XYZ can get additional 20 pens complimentary. XYZ starts thinking and ABC says immediately " Sir I am sure you want to go ahead in your career and for your next promotion, you can use this extraordinary pen to sign on your promotion letter or new appointment letter at another place or signing a new business contract. XYZ impressed by his pitch and spontaneity moves forward to negotiation stage of ABC's expected salary and joining date. After a short while, ABC lands a job
So why did XYZ hire ABC as a sales executive? Because ABC knew how to handle objections the most critical part, ABC was enthusiastic ( in terms of his appearance and his voice), ABC was high in energy, ABC knew how to offer options and most importantly ABC knew how to solve a basic sales problem.
Now let us take another example and this time it is for the role of Customer service. 20 applicants apply for the position of Customer Service Executive. The hiring manager called XYZ starts interviewing all the applicants and he becomes a very tough customer and gives a scenario of an extremely irate and furious customer who is completely upset with service that he received and he was told by 30 different representatives that his problem will be fixed but his problem never got solved and he is threatening to file a lawsuit against the company if his problem is not fixed and he is seeking a refund too
. Most applicants try their usual reply " I am sorry for the inconvenience and I will do my best resolve this for you " XYZ rejects these type of replies and rejects the candidate and in this process, 19 candidates are rejected. The last applicant ABC projects confidence and starts his customer handling skills with this opening " Dear Customer I can imagine how annoying and frustrating this must have been for you and moreover 30 representatives misleading you must have been as painful as adding fuel to the fire. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Now I will ensure that I will do everything possible from my end to resolve this for you and this will be your final approach to us for this particular problem and if I cannot solve the problem then I will get my manager and his manager and if the problem does not get solved then I will see to it that I will have this escalated to CEO of our company and regarding refund let me discuss this with my manager and then I will be able to comment on that and I am not saying that a refund will be denied but for anything related to refund I will have to consult my manager and our company policy. You have been with us for a long time and we do not want to lose a valuable customer like you. After a while, ABC says " Sir I have consulted with my manager and I have taken special permission for 123 refunds and we are also offering a temporary fix for your problem and moreover, your problem will be fixed within 6 hours and I will personally call you to inform this. Customer is pleased with this and ABC converts a customer's complaint into an appreciation " Hiring manager XYZ is impressed with this style of handling a customer and moves to negotiation stage of expected salary and joining date and boom ABC lands a job as customer service Executive. So again why did this applicant get a job and that too with a greater pay? Because ABC was confident, assured the customer, empathise with the customer
and most importantly ABC knew how to solve the problem.
Now let us take another example of a person applying for the position of Chef in a restaurant meets the owner. So, for example, the applicant goes by name A and owner goes by name B. A begins by greeting B and B asks him what does he know about cooking and what are the type of meals he is aware of. A replied that he knows how to prepare vegetarian, non-vegetarian, vegetarian, Jain special food, Buddhist, continental, north Indian, south Indian etc. B says ok and now prepare Mexican curry within 1 hour as I eat my lunch at 1 pm. A says " no problem Sir I can cook Mexican curry in half an hour and do you want me to prepare anything else apart from this? " B says " Yes prepare Cream cheese Spinach Omelette " A replies enthusiastically and says he will prepare Mexican curry and Cream cheese Spinach Omelette within 30 minutes and till then he suggests B to relax and enjoy music. After half an hour A serves Mexican curry, steamed rice and Cream cheese Spinach Omelette. He presents this with a lot of smiles and presents food with a lot of decoration. Impressed with his service and the tasty food he served B offers A job of a chef with a higher salary and asks him to join immediately.
How did A get a job as a chef with a higher salary? Well because he prepared tasty food, he knew how to cook a variety of food within a shorter span of time and had a lot of enthusiasm and smile all things vital to be a wonderful chef. Most importantly he solved a problem.
Let us take another example of a person applying for the job of an engineer and his hiring manager presents a problem of building a huge system of flats within a limited area. The hiring manager called ABC wants to construct 100 residential flats in the form of interconnected buildings however due to shortage of space he has a problem doing this. Applicant XYZ says " no problem Sir, I can fix this for you. You need not be concerned about constructing 10 interconnected buildings and rather we can construct a 50 storey skyscraper which will house 2 flats in 1 floor. ABC asks how are you going to do this? Do you have a blueprint? Sir yes I can share a rough sketch of how will this 50 storey tower look like and let me ask you how much time do you think will it take for you to finish this? XYZ says 3 years. ABC says " I can get this done in 1 year, " XYZ says how is that possible? do you have any specific plan? ABC says yes I have case studies and access to engineering reports of those constructions which were completed in the unbelievable time frame. XYZ says ok and so ABC does a sketch and then also presents a blueprint and a case study for this project. The hiring manager XYZ loves dedication of ABC and he hires him as a Chief Engineer.
So how did ABC get a job as a chief engineer? Well, he knew what he needs to done and how to do this and most importantly how to solve a problem.
Now some of you may feel like asking me " Hey Shiva did you also apply these tips in your life including the point of solving a problem? " My answer is yes. I have attended job interviews for any types of jobs including white-collar and blue-collar and every time I got a job, it was because of me projecting confidence, knowing what needs to be done and most importantly I knew how to solve a problem even if I knew just little bit about how to solve a problem
Now let us take a few more examples and I will try to keep this short as this blog may become too long to read. Fair enough? Ok, so a Chartered accountant( CA) applies for post of CA in a Tax Consultancy and his hiring manager gives him a tough real-life scenario of filing tax returns and this applicant ABC solves it efficiently. So again how did ABC get a job as a CA in Tax Consultancy firm? Well he knew what needs to be done and again most importantly ABC knew how to solve a problem
In the next example, we have a person applying for the job of a teacher in a School. So the head of the school who is interviewing this applicant does ask why should he hire him as a teacher? This candidate called ABC replies that he knows a unique method using which he can help even dumb students to learn any subject and score better in their examinations. So XYZ asks him to show a demo of how this can be done. So ABC demonstrates his method and he does that in front of a live class and asks them to give a test and then shows the results and the headmaster is pleased with this and offers him a job
Now a person who applies for the job of a driver introduces himself to his boss and boss asks him to drive to a particular location without the help of GPS.
So this driver ABC drives at a medium pace, informs his boss what the symbols on the road mean and does not violate any traffic rules and has a smile on his face. His boss offers him a job because his boss does realise ABC can be trusted, is an efficient driver, is great with directions and most importantly can solve a problem.
Now we have a software engineer
called ABC who has a B Tech degree. He and other applicants apply for a job and amongst many applicants, he does something unique and in his interview does prove that he can bring value and he does this by showing an app that he has developed which can offer solutions to a particular problem and he also informs his boss that he has the plan to launch new software. His hiring manager is convinced that he is the right hire for the company. So what landed him a job? His uniqueness, His creativity and most importantly his ability to solve a problem.
Let us look at another example of how an editor gets the job of an editor. So this applicant ABC applies for the job of an editor and in his interview, his hiring manager shows him an article and asks him to spot errors in that article and asks him to fix it in 2 minutes. ABC resolves it in a minute and portrays a great attitude.
So now it is time to conclude what is the common denominator while being selected for any job. Is it just credentials and experience? Those things are fine however they are not enough and marketplace is full of people who have qualifications and work experience yet are unemployed and the major reason is being unable to prove that he or she can solve the problem no matter what. So the common factor in getting any job is to prove one's ability to solve a problem.
So these things such as qualification, experience, great attitude, confidence, energy and an ability to solve a problem all increase the chances of getting hired in any field
I hope this helps you. I truly appreciate your patience in reading this long blog. Have a wonderful day
Regards
Shiva Krishnan
